Not too much going on this week. Just a fuck ton of work and not too much time for anything else. I mean, I didn't have time to put the new ep of TORT up for Saturday and I totally fucking spaced writing something for Review a Bad Game Day. I felt like real shit for spacing that out. 1MoreCastle.com does a great event doing this and Review a Great Game Day. If any of you guys read this, I'm sorry. And I'm not saying that in a way where it would be nothing without me, for RAGGD I really enjoyed spreading the word and Retweeting links; just doing my part to get it out there. I'm really sorry. Aside from that, I added a new section for Pickups this week. So, fucking enjoy, I don't know.
When the Music's Over by The Doors
Spanish Caravan by The Doors
White Rabbit by Jefferson Airplane
Where is My Mind by Pixies
Where it's At by Beck
Das Minecraften continues. Didn't get up to much gaming this week, but I did get some more time with the boys online. In this crusade, I finished building my tree fort and it is absolutely formed from bits and pieces of just dirt, sand and some wood. It is definitely the poor man's paradise I envisioned. We did venture into some unseen territory. We journeyed into the Nether Realm, which I never really knew existed. I kind of had this idea like it was an Oblivion gate and enemies would pour out. We all got equipped and went in and I found something very surprising. The music was actually really AWESOME in that place. I mean, the game doesn't really have the greatest soundtrack. So, you enter the Nether Realm, it's a lot of lava lakes and Netherbricks. There were some dormant Zombie Pigmen that just sit there and let you throttle them and then explode chucking random items at you like gold nuggets and stone swords. Then the Magma Blocks that break down into smaller Magma blocks, so on and so forth. In essence, not really as scary as I thought...UNTIL THE GIGANTIC FLYING SQUID THAT SHOOTS BOMBS OUT OF ITS MOUTH SHOWS UP. Ok, now that fucking thing was scary. Long story short, it killed the shit out of me. This leads to something annoying that I have found with the 360 version of this game. Poor load times and glitches. In the Nether realm, I literally got stuck on nothing. Just glitching forward repetitively. Plus, the maps take an eternity to load. I need to check and see if the PC version is the same. After many a nights playing, I think it's time to give it a break...yeah, we'll see how long that fucking lasts.
Decimation: Generation M
For those of you that don't know what House of M is, well SPOILER ALERT. In a nutshell, the Scarlet Witch lost control of her powers, some in the mutant community wanted her dead, she didn't want that so she made an entire new reality where mutants were the dominant species on the planet but was then thwarted and right before she died, she erased the mutant gene from existence in the real world and about 99% of mutants on Earth lost their powers and they called this day, M-day. Got it? Fucking fantastic, Decimation is the fallout from this and it explores what mutants are doing now that they do not have powers. Generation M in Decimation follows a writer for The Alternative named, Sarah Floyd, who became an alcoholic after her daughter passed away. She is known for writing an article called the Mutant Diaries in which she showed the stories of mutants and their backgrounds. After M-Day, Sarah started a new article called the Ex-Mutant Diaries. I think you can get what it was about. Sarah's new column finds her in some great fame as the acceptance for her writings are high. During her investigations, she begins to receive letters from a serial killer called Ghoul that include pictures of dead mutants with signs on them that say “not enough died.” Sarah has to continue tell mutants' stories while struggling through her alcohol abuse all while some sicko keep sending her pictures of murdered innocents. I really enjoyed this comic. I didn't really expect all the emotional ups and downs it had in stored. Looking into the lives of random, unheard people and how their universe has changed, for good and bad, after the loss of their mutant abilities. One story was of a woman that could control pheromones and get men to just throw money at her. Now, she's just a dried up whore that can't get a date. Then there's the story of a man that couldn't play basketball because of his mutant power; no one would accept him because of his talent. After he lost his powers, he found out that he had to learn the game all over again but was extremely happy that he actually had a chance to fulfill his dream. I mean, comics like the X-men are great. I never really pictured what would happen if they did not have powers. Then you take a look at this scenario in this book and you realize how much different their universe is. There's also some really shocking illustrations that just move you. Not to spoil too much, but have you ever wondered what Chamber looks like without his nuclear heart? Crazy ass shit, let tell ya. Generation M is just on part of the Decimation story. It's the first of the series I read and I want to read more.
Now this film...I've heard of it and I saw the trailer. I thought originally, “an independent super hero movie...cool!” Little did I know, the odd spectacle I was about to witness. Frank Darbo, played by Rainn Wilson(the guy from The Office...I hate that show) who is your typical loser that had one good thing happen to him which is the marriage to his wife, Sarah, played by Liv Tyler. Sarah leaves Frank for a shady character, Jacques, played by Kevin Bacon, which is my favorite character in the movie. Jacques gets Sarah, a recovering drug user, back on the crank and pretty much takes her away from Frank. Frank is devastated and looks to the super hero world for answers...that and odd and freakish delusions he has that makes him think that God has chosen him to do the work of good for him. Frank makes a persona called The Crimson Bolt and meets a young girl that works at a comic book shop named Libby, played by Ellen Page, that then becomes his “kid sidekick” Bolty. Frank and Libby fight crime as Frank builds the experience to free his wife from the clutches of Jacques. Doesn't sound too bad, right? Here's my problem with this film. The first half of it is really enjoyable. It has a dark and geeky tone and is filled will good humor. I'm sorry, but watching Rainn Wilson imagining himself getting butt fucked in prison is hilllllaaaaarious. Frank's experiments towards crime fighting and inspirations from the Holy Avengers, played by Nathan Fillion, will make you laugh and Kevin Bacon just as some drug dealing gangster is really entertaining. It's when Libby enters the picture is the when the movie flips a 180 and becomes a different film. It switches from the mood of wonder and dark comedy to just over the top violence and Ellen Page straddling herself on Rainn Wilson saying she's going to cum...it's extremely disturbing. Blood splatters and gut spilling at the drop of a hat. I don't like how the flow of the film just wanders off into a B rated gorefest. It's actually kind of the same reason I didn't like the movie Drive; the movie sets you up for one mood and then totally turns into a different movie. If it's going to be a dark comedy about a loser being a super hero, make it that. If it's going to be two idiots running around killing criminals in buckets of blood, then make it that. Don't start with one then flip to the other. I wouldn't suggest this film or recommend it. And yes, I know it's the same director as Tromeo and Juliet, I don't give a fuck. I didn't like the fucking movie.
What's Eating Gilbert Grape
I've seen this movie a few times. It's one film that I really enjoy. Gilbert Grape is just a guy that has to take care of his mental challenged brother as well as provide for his family all while living in a dead end town without any hope and prayer of moving on with his life. I think a lot of people end of feeling this way with the town they grow up in. I myself have always wanted to find a way out of the town I live in. Though, my situation isn't really that bad and doesn't compare. But you can at least imagine. This movie is good because the acting is good. Johnny Depp as Gilbert is perhaps one of my favorite roles he's ever done. You can feel his boredom and desire to just leave everything behind and start a new life. But you also feel the complexity of his situation because of the enormous amount of responsibility he has for his family, especially his brother, Arnie. Leonardo DiCaprio does a good job as Arnie Grape. The relationship between Gilbert and Arnie is quite admirable. Gilbert protects him, bathes him, even brings him to work with him. You can see, feel, understand Gilbert's feelings towards just wanting to drop everything and run. When Becky shows ups, the love interest of the film played by Juliette Lewis, Gilbert starts to see everything beyond his home town, beyond his life, and his desire to move on grows even more. I think this is a great film that strikes your emotions in several different ways. You ask yourself, “what would I do in this situation?” It's very moving. It has humor, sadness, joy; just a hobo stew of emotional jerks. Funny thing is, this doesn't really seem like the kind of movie I would like, which makes it even more surprising that I did like it. I like it a lot, actually. If you got some time, and Netflix, I'd give this movie a watch.
Revenge of the Nerds 3: The Next Generation
Ok, so, I'm a big Nerds fan, focusing on the first movie, of course. The second movie when they went to Miami was...eh, ok at best. But the third film I had to watch because I don't think I've even watched the whole thing. And for good fucking reason. This movie brings shame to the Nerds franchise and was the obvious beginning of the end. How they were able to make a fourth movie after this one is a fucking mind rape of a puzzle. So, the third film features a changed Adams College where nerds rule the campus. Lewis' nephew and best friend attend Adams and join the famous fraternity, Lambda Lambda Lambda. But things change when a 1960s alumnus teamed up with old enemy Stan Gable to retake Adams College and give the power back to the Alpha Betas...yadda yadda yadda, fucking same shit as the first one when you break it down. Pranks versus pranks. The only difference is, the cast in the first movie were a group of classic characters while this “new generation” is just a bunch of forgettable actors you don't really give a flying fuck about. In fact, this whole movie is damn near an entire remake of the first film except it's a thousand times fucking worse. I mean, some Asian Elvis impersonator that makes hamburgers using his armpits...how is this guy some kind of genius? Oh, and lets not forget Lewis' struggle with denying that he's a nerd and thinks he's the cool guy now going by the name Lou instead. This is the only somewhat interesting thing about the movie. Now that I think of it, Stan, Lewis and Betty are all in the movie(same actors from the first movie) and they are the only ones that you really care about or interested in. Why? Probably because they can somewhat fucking act. Not like the new lot. The characters are stereotypes and no real acting goes into it. This film wants you to believe that the characters are who they are because they look like what they should be instead of acting like they should be. It's just horrible to watch. There's barely anything funny about it. I think Revenge of the Nerds needs to stay in the 80s. When it came into the 90s, it was the death of it. Don't watch this film. Just keep watching the first one.
